Hand-tied extensions have the ability to last up to 12 months, sometimes even longer, when proper home care and rules are followed. Follow these extension rules to ensure the longevity of your investment.

brush. hydrate. protect.

  • It is very important to brush & detangle your extensions prior to them getting wet in the shower.
  • To key to brushing your extensions is, with your free hand, hold the base of your rows to avoid unnecessary tension & pulling, while brushing from your ends and working upward. It is important to brush up to the seam of the weft to prevent matting, but making sure to avoid brushing directly over that weft line as that can catch those hairs causing "looping", where they are pulled up and over the main weft line. Unfortunately this is not fixable and will require replacement of the weft.
  • Brushing multiple times a day will help keep tangles at bay! I suggest carrying a Travel size brush in your bag to keep you covered at all times!

Brushing.

  • Microfiber towels are recommended to avoid roughing up the hair. NEVER twist you hair up in a towel after showering. This can cause tension & pulling, especially on fragile corners.
Shower head filters are a benefit to EVERYONE! Hard minerals found in water can pass through those pipes causing buildup, discoloration, and brittleness to all hair (not just extensions). This is an easy filter to add to your shower head (or some have a separate shower head option), and allows you to not worry about the damage your water may be causing. Filters typically need replaced between 3-6 months depending on the type. My favorite filter is Rain Drops by Nine Zero One as it was created by celebrity hairstylists to preserve the life of our hair and skin. You can find that linked here: Rain Drops Shower Head Filter
  • Do not wash your hair everyday as this will shorten the life of your extension hair. The half wash is the perfect solution to combat this!
  • If wearing 2 or more rows, separate them horizontally and secure them, working from bottom to top, to ensure each section gets cleansed.
  • Gently massage the weft line, working the hair between your index & middle fingers, gently rubbing along the top and underneath of the weft. Avoid any aggressive scrubbing or pulling.
  • Make sure you are just shampooing your scalp rather than the lengths of your hair. This can cause your ends to dry out, and I promise the water run off from your shampoo will remove any product from your ends!
  • Conditioner should only be applied from the mid-lengths to ends of the hair (think everything below the ears). Do not apply conditioner to the scalp or the base of the extensions as it can cause slipping.
  • Rinse Rinse Rinse! With all of that hair it's easy for product to hide between rows and cause buildup, so make sure all of that hair is rinsed extremely well!

Washing.

  • When using hot tools it is imperative to use thermal protection every single time. One pass without it can dry out extensions, reducing their lifespan and causing shrinkage of the length from heat damage.
  • NEVER go above 320° when using curling irons and hair straighteners. Be careful when using blow-dry brushes such as the Dyson AirWrap, as the heat can be incredibly hot causing discoloration at the top of the wefts. Always use lower heat!
  • Extensions should be oiled with GoldieLocks® Signature Serum 2-3 times a day to maintain that moisture.

  • Liberally apply GoldieLocks® Leave-In Conditioner prior to detangling hair.
  • Gently brush hair, working from the ends upward, while maintaining light pressure at the weft line with your other hand.
  • Extensions like to hold water! I recommend letting your hair air dry until it's 80% dry then finishing with your blow dryer on a medium heat setting, making sure the weft line is 100% dry.

styling.

  • The #1 rule of hair extensions is to NEVER to go bed with wet hair. Doing so can cause damage to your natural hair as well as your extension hair, and can lead to matting & molding. Make sure it is 100% dry.
  • Putting your hair into two loose braids or a top knot is recommended for sleeping to ensure everything is secure and there's no risk of rolling & pulling on your extensions.
  • Sleeping on a Silk pillowcase is not only great for your hair, but also your skin! Overtime Cotton can cause frizz & split ends from friction, whereas Silk is gentle and helps maintain moisture within the hair and skin.

  • Wet hair with clean tap water, or have a spray bottle on hand to thoroughly wet hair prior to getting in the pool, lake, ocean, ect.
  • Liberally apply GoldieLocks® Leave-In Conditioner or Signature Serum to create a barrier for the hair from the water.
  • Brush conditioner or serum through the hair and secure in a tight bun or bubble braids. The hair needs to be completely secure!
  • Brush & wash your extensions immediately after swimming. Apply a hair mask such as GoldieLocks® Ultra Hydrating Signature Hair Mask for 5-10 minutes to replenish hydration.

Things to avoid with extensions...

It is crucial to completely avoid any sunscreens containing AVOBENZONE as the Active Ingredient. This will be found in majority of regular sunscreens on the market, while Mineral Sunscreens mainly use the active ingredient ZINC OXIDE.

Hair Extensions endure several processes prior to packaging, one of which is using textile dyes to color the hair for deeper penetration and longevity. When AVOBENZONE comes into contact with these textile dyes, a chemical reaction occurs which causes blondes, and weft colors with lighter dimension throughout, to turn a peachy, pink/salmony orange shade. Once this occurs, it is unfortunately unable to be removed.

It's important to pay attention to what family members and those around you are using as well. If someone is using a Chemical Sunscreen Spray, the residual effects can be transferred in the air causing it to land on your hair if close enough, without you even noticing. And next time you apply sunscreen to the kids, make sure to wash your hands immediately afterwards as it can and will transfer from your hands to your hair.
